Messrs Gillows of London and Lancaster provided a number of similar commodes, with 'tower-cornered' tops supported on Pompeiian reed-enriched columns, such as featured in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Maker, Upholsterer and General Artist's Encyclopaedia, 1804, pl. 2. In 1811, as part of a large consignment of furniture, Gillows supplied a closely related commode with vase-capped pillars to the Rev. Mr. Twemlow of Peats Wood, Market Drayton (offered anonymously, Christie's London, 10 April 1986, lot 127). Another closely related commode was sold anonymously, Christie's South Kensington, 30 September 1998, lot 186 (£7,475).

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
There are the inevitable minor dents, marks, scratches and shrinkage cracks due to age and use. As stated in the catalogue, the handles apparently original. These show some damage, wear to the lacquer, dents and breakages. Chest A has pine drawer bottoms, B has mahogany drawer bottoms. Chest B has a piece of missing reed moulding at the back left corner of one and a chip from the back edge. The back right corner of the same commode has a replaced piece of reed moulding. Chest A has a large vertical shrinkage split in the right side panel. There are minor variations in the carving, but essentially they are a pair. Structurally secure. Both have a lovely rich colour and although the handles are slightly damaged, they are in good condition.
