Lot Essay

Epitomising the neoclassical goût grec, these wall lights bear similarities to several models of the 1760s by the likes of Philippe Caffieri, Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain and Jean-Louis Prieur. They relate in particular to designs for nineteen pairs of wall lights sent by Philippe Caffieri to the Royal Palace in Warsaw for King Stanislas-Augustus of Poland. Firmly placed within the early neo-classical taste the straight lines and classical ornamentation of these lights derive from elements of two designs by Caffieri (illustrated H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel, et. al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986 vol. 2, pp. 558-560, figs.9, 14). Though less intricately ornamented than the designs for the Warsaw commission these wall lights share the foliate-cast vase hung with swag garlands, berry finials and shaped branches of fig. 14 and the architectural moulding of fig. 9.
