Lot Essay

Considered one of the most proficient rising artists, Sun Xun is a contemporary Chinese artist who is acknowledged for his multifarious and innovative oeuvre. Born in the post-cultural revolution era, Xun was influenced by the differences between the public political portrayal of the historic events and the personal memories of the citizens. Thus, he created drawings, paintings and installations experimenting with a variety of mediums such as traditional ink-and-wash, pigmented powder and woodcuts to manifest the concepts of reality versus illusion and past versus present. In 2006, he founded the π animation studio and produced short animation films that collated his images. By expressing the creation process, he efficaciously explores the notions of time and history.
