Born in Hebei and based in Shanghai, Wang Xiaoshuang is a notable rising contemporary artist who uses modes of Abstract Expressionism to integrate his concerns and criticism over the incessant overdevelopment of cities. In 2013, Wang received his BFA at the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, and soon received his MFA at the Shanghai University. His works are currently exhibited in Paris as part of the prestigious DSL collection, a leading contemporary asian art collection that focuses on works by Chinese avant-garde artists.
Wang’s oeuvre offers a rational and sincere perspective on the future of our society by effectively capturing the extant chaos that has resulted from the destructive nature of urbanization. In his works, Wang employs the intricate and meticulous technique of layering thick coats of paint on the canvas. As a consequence, the painting generates a captivating visual power that at once reflects the vivacity of the metropolis and subtly insinuates the pain and melancholy from the ceaseless driving force that is transforming the city.
