Lot Essay

A revolutionary pioneer in ink painting circles, Chen Xinmao’s exploration of the medium of ink art involved a process of gradually deconstructing the traditional form. Beginning in 1985, he started to integrate the techniques of abstract act with traditional Chinese ink painting. His work is characteristically oriented towards a contemporary aesthetic while simultaneously recalling the traditions of Chinese ink.

In Untitled, Chen Xinmao’s splatters of ink recall the paintings of the abstract expressionists. Yet, the use of ink and paper also reference the traditions of Chinese ink painting. By fusing the two artistic languages together, Chen Xinmao’s creative innovation with ink art shines through as he brings the ancient Chinese tradition to the forefront of contemporary art.
