Lot Essay

While Do Ho Suh is primarily known for his room-scale installations and sculptural works, he has also consistently utilized drawing throughout his career to develop and frame his ideas. Suh’s sketches of human figure date back to his early practice which is filled with references to himself and others. The images of self-portrait, or what the artist calls “a contemplation of myself“ are often recognized as Suh’s exploration of physical and psychological space that one desires before individuality is lost to a crowd.

Self-portrait, which shows him looking inward at himself while also outward at others, has simultaneously conceptualized the double meaning of an individual as a container and a configuration of space. Suh’s approach of self-exploration that presents in this work has envisioned one’s way as an individual in the world, resonating to the artist’s renowned installations that consider the space of a home, like personal and collective memories, continually travels with you.
