Lot Essay

Steeped in the essence of tradition, Gao Qian’s works are notable for their enchanting feminine spirit as well as the illusion to a woman’s private boudoir. She documents the contemporary women’s experience through the delicate and elegant renderings of objects, making her one of the most prominent leaders in the “new fine brush” (xingongbi) movement.

In Untitled, Gao Qian continues her fascination with objects. By noting their presence, she calls attention to the absence of the body that these objects are meant to be held in, appreciated by and interacted with. Moreover, with the incorporation of a bird resting on the table, she fuses the active with the still, introducing a dynamic energy into the otherwise still life.
