Lot Essay

A largely self-taught painter, Walasse Ting developed a notable career that traversed major movements across Shanghai, Paris, and New York, as well as a range of Western and Chinese media. Though his time in New York brought him into close contact with Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism, his style was equally informed by an exuberant sense of color and line that set him well apart.

In Untitled (Rooster), Walasse continues his signature use of rich, saturated colors and flat backgrounds. Through his fluid brushstrokes and adept use of contrasting colors, Ting renders an endearing picture of a rooster, conjuring its vivacity in broad swathes of ink. In this work, Ting’s ability to represent space through flat fields of color is on full display.
