Lot Essay

A largely self-taught painter, Walasse Ting developed a notable career that traversed major movements across Shanghai, Paris, and New York, as well as a range of Western and Chinese media. Though his time in New York brought him into close contact with Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism, his style was equally informed by an exuberant sense of color and line that set him well apart.

Untitled (Green Lady and Fish Bowl) displays the female figure in an expressive composition that highlights Ting’s creativity in portraitures. Swatches of exuberant colors decorate the woman and the fishes while minimal outlines create a rhythmic pattern that compliments the work with a sense of poetic elusiveness. Through the woman and her gaze at the fishbowl, Ting, again, draws upon his fascination of female beauty as inspiration for his creative work.
