A largely self-taught painter, Walasse Ting developed a notable career that traversed major movements across Shanghai, Paris, and New York, as well as a range of Western and Chinese media. Though his time in New York brought him into close contact with Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism, his style was equally informed by an exuberant sense of color and line that set him well apart.

Similar to his other depictions of women, Ting decorates the subject with blooming florals, as if to draw an equation between the vibrant blooms and the figure’s natural beauty. Moreover, as she lies with her head on her crossed arms, the work is imbued with a sense of melancholy while her beauty captivates the viewers.
