Lot Essay

As one of the leading contemporary artists of his time, Wang Jinsong is perhaps to most versatile, leading artistic explorations in ink painting, oil painting, installation and video art. His earliest oil paintings were recognized at the forefront of China’s Cynical Realism and Political Pop art movements. In his later works, Wang Jinsong reverts to his first medium: traditional ink painting, marking a change from his previous avant-garde work.

In 2000s, Wang Jinsong began his Ink Figures series which featured candid snapshots of subjects present in modern day China. These monochromatic depictions of figures would be caught in the middle of motion and are easily recognized as a part of the everyday culture in China. In Untitled, Wang Jinsong continues his interest in the social conditions and the contemporary Chinese society by commenting on the anonymity of rural workers. By depicting an unidentified window cleaner, Wang Jinsong brings the anonymous work force into the forefront and reminds viewers of their often forgotten contributions in China’s rapid urbanization.
