Lot Essay

As one of the leading contemporary artists of his time, Wang Jinsong is perhaps to most versatile, leading artistic explorations in ink painting, oil painting, installation and video art. His earliest oil paintings were recognized at the forefront of China’s Cynical Realism and Political Pop art movements. In his explorations into photography, his interest in the implications of government policies on social conditions and contemporary Chinese society continue to be the focal point of his work.

Standard Family is a revisit of Wang Jinsong’s own series he began in 1996. In the One Child Policy series, he produced a series of oil paintings that documents a generation of Chinese families affected by the One-Child policy. In this revisit, he puts together a collection of photographs of these families to present not only the mass transformation public policy has on society but also the individual changes one feels in their own families. With careful observation of the lifestyle, fashion and inherited features in each family, Wang Jinsong reveals the present and future situations of these families.
