Lot Essay

"Inspired by ancient Greek architecture, Marden has created a series of prints which play with the contrasts between light and dark and solid and void. These interests arise partly out of his observation of the columnar facades of temples where brilliant light contrasts with mellow shadow, where it can dissolve the material into the immaterial and where, as the viewer moves along and around, the flat plane can change into a labyrinthine depth as layer upon layer of columns are revealed and concealed in turn." (Jeremy Lewison, Brice Marden Prints 1961-1991, Tate Gallery, London, 1992, p.121)
