Lot Essay

This is a portrait of Peter Langan, the proprietor of Odins, a restaurant in London favored by artists who were allowed to trade art for meals. The restaurant was frequented by Hockney and his circle in the early 1970s, and Hockney drew a picture of Langan standing under an umbrella to illustrate the menu, which listed dishes named after Langan's favorite customers.
