拍品专文

"It is a measure of the hold that Chardin's The Young Schoolmistress (c. 1737, National Gallery, London) had over Freud that even after he had finished his two paintings and the large etching, he made one further print that focused on what he called 'the most beautiful ear in art' (Feaver 2020, pp. 377-8). William Feaver attributes the decision to something Freud said he had hitherto overlooked, namely the earring. This detail, which is not obvious in Chardin's painting, was also noted by François Bernard Lépicié, who in 1740 made an engraving of the painting." (Toby Treves, Lucian Freud: Catalogue Raisonné of the Prints, Modern Art Press, London, 2022, p. 226)
