Lot Essay

Rendered in dark tones, these alternately flat and perspectival constructions depict sites in New York, San Francisco, and London. Their glass and metal facades create a rich pattern of signage and reflective planes. Screenprinting, a stencil process, was the ideal medium to approximate Estes’ elaborate, flat, and linear images. For Estes’ screens, he shipped painted maquettes to Domberger's German workshop, where the printers broke down the image into its general forms to create a series of screens.
