Lot Essay

Born to Greek immigrant parents, Theodoros Stamos began his artistic training as a sculptor, before devoting himself to painting and printmaking, media in which he was largely self-taught. Stamos drew inspiration from the color field artists of the 1950s and 60s, including Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, and infused his works with elements of calligraphy and expressive marks. The two screenprints in the present lot are typical of Stamos’ engagement with flattened space, simple shapes, and evocative color combinations.
