Lot Essay

This edition was created for Ai Weiwei's exhibition at the Haus der Kunst, Munich entitled 'So Sorry' which ran from October 2009 to January 2010. Each edition contains a crushed pottery vessel from the Neolithic period (5,000-3,000 B.C.) inside a contemporary glass jar, fusing contemporary Western and ancient Chinese culture through an iconoclastic process.

Ai Weiwei's conceptual works can be linked to the readymades of Marcel Duchamp, in particular to the artist's 'Air de Paris'. This poetic work consisted of an 'empty' store-bought glass vessel and impelled the viewer to question what exactly, if anything, the glass container holds.
