Allan D'Arcangelo was born in Buffalo, New York, to Italian parents. He first read history at the University of Buffalo and continued his studies at the New School of Social Research and City University in New York, where he began to take an interest in art and painting. He went on to study painting at Mexico City College. On the road journey there, he experienced the vast landscapes of North America, with its endless highways and stark, isolated road signs, which became the defining motifs of his art. His pared-down compositions of plains, highways, arrows and signs rendered in primary colors stand 'at the crossroads' between Minimalism, Pop Art and Hard-Edge painting. Following his departure from Marlborough Gallery in 1975, Allan D'Arcangelo became increasingly overlooked by the art world, but is now being rediscovered and credited for his quintessential depictions of the 20th century American landscape. His estate is represented by Garth Greenan Gallery, New York. His work is found in important public collections in the US and abroad, including Tate, London and Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. He was awarded a retrospective in Modena, Italy, in 2005.
