Lot Essay

This print was sold by the Cologne Kunstverein to members of the museum to support the creation of Christo and Jean-Claude’s Mastaba. The mastaba was eventually built of out 1000 oil barrels for an exhibition at the Cologne Kunstverein, titled The 60s: Colognes Emergence as Art Metropolis, From Happening to Art Market in 1986. Each print was sold with an oil drum from the original installation, depicted in the print as a floor-to-ceiling structure. The title references the flat, rectangular tombs of ancient Egypt built long before the pyramids of Egypt’s New Kingdom period. Christo would go on to build increasingly larger versions of the Mastaba structure in Philadelphia, Houston, Abu Dhabi, and London.
