The edition is based on a composition created in 1960, and was published on occasion of the exhibition of drawings by Claes Oldenburg at the Kunsthalle Tübingen in 1975.
Early on in his career, Claes Oldenburg was drawn to the visual environment of urban streets and slums. He staged exhibitions consisting of urban debris, silhouetted figures and signs unified by their ragged contours and monochrome black-brown tones. Domberger’s print with its inky forms, utilitarian paper, and smudged finish recalls Oldenburg’s early Happenings of the 1960s. In order to produce Oldenburg’s Street Figure, Domberger used four different screens and four different shades of black ink, resulting in a striking blotch and thematizes the very act of printmaking.
