Lot Essay

One of the biggest threats to the future of the planet is obliteration by a giant meteor. The meteorite has become the embodiment of fear of the unknown, although the earth is littered with them” (Cornelia Parker, 2001)

In this series Cornelia Parker has made a series of `landings' consisting of 'hits and misses' made by heating a 400 year old iron meteorite until glowing hot and then using it to burn mythic locations on maps of the American South.

The set comprises the following `hits' and `misses':

Misses: Roswell, New Mexico (2/20); Waco, Texas (12/20); Truth or Consequences, New Mexico (18/20)
Hits: Paris, Texas (2/20); Bagdad, Louisiana (4/20); Bethlehem, North Carolina (20/20)

Meteorite Lands in the Middle of Nowhere was issued as a series by the publisher The Multiples Store, rather than as a consistently numbered set. Complete series are extremely rare as the majority of the prints were sold individually. The publisher is aware of only two other entire suites.
