Lot Essay

This elegant two-tone screenprint was produced to commemorate the tenth anniversary of The Acting Company, a travelling theater group. Sultan collaborated with theater professionals, including playwright David Mamet, on a number of occasions. The floral subject of this print is typical of Sultan work, which often feature fruits and flowers rendered in monochrome, flattened planes. On the importance of this motif to his life and work, Sultan says, “I have been using flower imagery for 40 years, only because in the 1970s, I started to see the urban environment as a source for new growth. At the time, no one in my generation was painting flowers; now, of course, everyone is.”
