Lot Essay

The Danish artist Richard Mortensen moved fluidly between styles throughout his career, from Surrealism to Op Art, spontaneously mixing elements of the figurative and abstract. He eventually settled on a abstract geometric approach and became a prominent figure in the artistic scene of mid-century Copenhagen and the Linien Group, which comprised artists working in the Bauhaus style. Mortensen’s meticulous geometric abstractions are noted for their formal clarity and their careful juxtapositions of lively colors and simple forms.
