Lot Essay

This print was created in conjunction with the announcement of the publication of Ten Works by Ten Painters which included ten screenprints by Stuart Davis, Robert Motherwell, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Larry Poons, George Ortman, Ad Reinhardt, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, and Ellsworth Kelly. The portfolio was arranged and published by Samuel J. Wagstaff, Jr., then a curator at the Wadsworth Atheneum. Wagstaff is also known as the benefactor and partner of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The ten contributions highlight the variety of work being produced by young and mid-career American artists in the 1960s. The cards are mostly unsigned, aside from a few that the artist autographed for friends.
