THE GWINN ESTATE
The Gwinn Estate, perched on the shores of Lake Erie in Bratenahl, Ohio, epitomizes early 20th century Gilded Age opulence. Commissioned by industrial magnate William Gwinn Mather in 1905, the estate was designed by architect Charles A. Platt, with the grounds advised on by landscape architect Warren H. Manning. The residence, completed in 1908, is a 16-room Italian Renaissance Revival mansion featuring a distinctive two-story Ionic portico inspired by the White House. The present table was formerly in the dining room at Gwinn. The estate's formal gardens, designed by Manning, include terraces, fountains, and sculptures, while a 505-foot curving seawall embraces the lakefront. Mather's sister, Katherine Livingston Mather, and later his wife, Elizabeth Ring Ireland, contributed to the estate's development, with Elizabeth commissioning landscape architect Ellen Biddle Shipman to redesign the walled garden in 1935. The estate remained in the Mather family until 1959.
