BLAIRSDEN HOUSE
Conceived as one of the great American country houses of the Gilded Age, Blairsden was commissioned by Clinton Ledyard Blair and his wife Florence Jennings Blair and realized between 1897 and 1903. Designed by the celebrated New York firm of Carrère & Hastings, with landscape plans by James Leal Greenleaf, the residence was oriented dramatically on a hillside overlooking Ravine Lake. Drawing inspiration from Renaissance Italian and French precedents, the architects achieved a seamless integration of house and landscape through gardens, terraces, and water features. At nearly 50,000 square feet, Blairsden ranked among the largest private residences in the United States and incorporated advanced technologies of its day, including a steel superstructure, poured concrete floors, and its own electrical plant. Following Blair’s death in 1949, the estate passed through several hands, its grounds subdivided, though the mansion itself endures as a landmark of American architectural ambition.

The present bust of Emperor Nero may once have formed part of a sculptural ensemble flanking the dramatic 300-foot reflecting pool leading to the pedimented entrance of the mansion, which is captured in a c.1940 photograph preserved in a Blair family album.
