THE NEEDLEWORK
The tapestry needlework on this pair of armchairs is a remarkable survival. The vibrant colors and intricate patterns are indebted to Ottoman and Persian carpet designs, which were highly fashionable in Georgian England. The coverings correspond to those on the celebrated suite of gilt-gesso chairs attributed to James Moore, originally commissioned for Wanstead House, Essex (see: a pair from the suite with Rolleston, Ltd., London). In the 18th century, textiles were the ultimate expression of wealth and consistently among the most valuable items recorded in household inventories, reflecting the extraordinary time, labor, and skill required in their production. It is therefore tempting to suggest that the present needlework may represent surplus panels from the Wanstead commission, or possibly examples later conceived to supplement or emulate that admired design, subsequently employed in the 19th century to upholster this pair of Regency armchairs within a broader country house decorative scheme.
