Chui Pui Chee was born in Hong Kong in 1980. He was inspired by his parents since he was a child and loves Chinese art and later studied under Professor Jat See-Yeu (Zhai Shiyao, 1935-2009) and Professor Wang Dongling (b. 1945). Chui graduated from Queen's College in 1999, and received a bachelor's degree in fine arts from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a master's degree and a doctorate degree in calligraphy from the China Academy of Art. He previously worked as art and design course coordinator of the School of Professional and Continuing Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a part-time lecturer of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, a part-time lecturer of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and an honorary consultant of the School of Professional and Continuing Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is currently an executive member of the Jiazi Calligraphy Society (academic), an executive member of Shizhai's Friends, and a researcher at the Modern Calligraphy Research Center of China Academy of Art. His works are in many art galleries and private collections. This painting is from the artist’s landscape series "Nine Abyss". It is based on the landscape of the Northern Song Dynasty and meticulously depicts the pine trees living unyieldingly under the dark and harsh abyss.
