Lot Essay

Zheng Jiazhen was a famous Hong Kong cartoonist, painting critic, senior newspaper and calligrapher and painter. Zheng was influenced by his father and studied literature and traditional painting and calligraphy since childhood. His calligraphy followed the style of Zhao Mengfu, and later of Yan Zhenqing. He was most well known for his landscapes and figures. His brushwork was straightforward and unconventional, leading to dramatic depiction of figures with vigorous movements and exquisite expressions.
