Lot Essay

The recipient of this work is Wang Shangyi (1905-1972). A native of Zhongshan, Guangdong, he graduated from Shanghai Nanyang Business School. In 1935, together with Fu Baoshi, Zhang Shuqi, Chen Zhifo, they initiated the Jishe Calligraphy and Painting Society. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, he served in the Central News Agency. After the war, he traveled with Li Xiongcai and honed his skills. He later moved to the United States and served as a visting professor in the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin.
