Lot Essay

Hu Yan, courtesy name Ruosi. His father was an agent of Zhang Daqian, so he entered the "Dafengtang" at the age of nine to study under Zhang Daqian. Growing up in an artistic environment since childhood, he was talented at painting. At the age of 14, he travelled eastward to Japan with his master and held a solo exhibition of his childhood paintings: at the age of 15, his work was awarded a gold medal at the Belgian World Exposition.
