Lot Essay

Li Zulai and his wife Li Deying were important family friends and lifetime sponsor of Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), the artist’s teacher. The Li and the Zhang families had long been close since their youth; during Zhang's early years in Shanghai, he was taken in by Li Zulai’s parents who sponsored and hosted him. Sun Yunsheng followed his teacher to Brazil to continue his studies, and regarded the Li couple as important elders. These paintings were imitation of his master's two important works (Lot 110-111) and were presented as gifts to the Li's.
