Lot Essay

Giorgio Vasari mentions this print as by Caraglio after Rosso Fiorentino and describes it quite precisely in his Vite (Milanesi edition, vol. V, p. 424). The preparatory drawing by Rosso is unfortunately lost, however, as Gramaccini and Meier point out, the raging Fury is unthinkable at this time without Michelangelo's figures or the prophets and Leonardo's studies of heads. (N. Gramaccini, H. J. Meier, Die Kunst der Interpretation, Berlin & Munich, 2009, no. 92).
