Lot Essay

Alberto Martini was a painter, printmaker and illustrator from the Veneto in Northern Italy. He spend much of his working life illustrating literary texts, including Dante's Divine Comedy but also Edgar Allen Poe, Shakespeare, Verlaine and Rilke. His bizarre and often macabre imagery makes him an important precursor of Surrealism.
This large, partially decomposed head, seemingly illuminated from inside and behind, is one of the most impressive and frightening faces of Death in this collection.
