Lot Essay
It appears that J. J. Ridinger created two very similar versions of this highly impressive plate, which were long thought of as different states of the same print. However, the present plate has been executed purely in mezzotint, without any engraved lines, and the arrow - among other differences - points directly at the word MIHI, rather than at the gap between the words.
Johann Jacob Ridinger's Rule of Death was created after a drawing by his father Johann Elias. It can be considered his masterpiece and a high-point in the art of mezzotint printing in Germany.
