Lot Essay

Time is here personified by Saturn devouring his child and sitting on an hourglass. He is followed by Death as the Grim Reaper on an old mare and an allegorical figure of Fame astride an elephant. On the globe in the background are the signs of the zodiac and in the tree we see a mechanical clock, a very fashionable object in the 16th century.
