This specimen is a piece of the Moon which was ejected off the lunar surface by an asteroid impact and later impacted Earth. Lunar meteorites are among the most exotic objects on our planet; about only 0.3% of all meteorites recovered are lunar in origin; more significantly, less than 225Ibs of meteorites originating from the Moon are known to exist and a significant percentage of this material is owned by governmental interests and is off limits to the private sector. NWA 7834 is a breccia – a rock composed of different fragments of rocks and minerals cemented together by interstitial impact melt. In the case of NWA 7834, this melt contains numerous bubbles, formed when some of the original, more volatile, constituents of the sample were vaporized by the impact of meteorites at the lunar surface. NWA 7834 was classified by Dr. Anthony Irving, among the world’s foremost classifiers of planetary material. This is a complete slice of a rock from the Moon.
