END PIECE OF A LUNAR BRECCIA (NWA 7834)

DISCOVERED NORTHWEST AFRICA, 2013; MODERN CUTTING
The cut face of this end piece evidences a galaxy of inclusions, the result of the ongoing pulverizing of the Moon’s surface by asteroid impacts prior to the collision directly responsible for launching this meteorite to Earth. NWA 7834 contains rare ophitic-textured mare basalt clasts in a vesicular, glass matrix. Minerals include anorthite, pigeonite, subcalcic augite, Ti-bearing chromite, olivine and grains of the metals kamacite and taenite—evidence of contamination of the lunar surface by impacting chondritic meteorites. The opposite end piece of the NWA 7834 mass has, for the past two years, been part of a NASA / U.S. Space and Rocket Center traveling exhibit across Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
