END PIECE OF OF A SILICATED IRON METEORITE (NWA 5549)
DISCOVERED IN NORTHWEST AFRICA IN 2008; MODERN CUTTING
The cut surface evidences amber-hued silicates interspersed in a matrix featuring a coarse Widmanstätten pattern, a latticework whose presence is diagnostic in the identification of iron meteorites. The furrowed, highly textured exterior seen on the reverse features the aerodynamic scalloping referred to as regamglypts (or thumb prints), the result of melting due to frictional heating the meteorite experienced as it decelerated while plunging through the Earth’s atmosphere.
