The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The original canvas has been relatively recently re-lined and as such maintains a good tension and remains structurally stable. Close examination of this painting, through uneven layers of thick, glossy varnish, confirms the sensitivity of the drawing and gradation of colour. Ultra-violet fluorescence examination confirms the density of the aged varnish and reveals at least two levels of retouching across the surface [eg. restoration to damages to the left of the central figure, and near the edges]. It reveals infilling to some of the craquelure [center of composition].
