Susanna and the Elders

The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

The canvas has been subject to relining; it is held under tension and remains stable. Examination in natural light shows some retouching to the flesh times. There has been some minor abrasion to the darker tones of the background as a result of the re-lining process, which allows the orange ground to be seen. There is a very minor hairline scratch to the foliage above Susanna’s head. Examination in UV light reveals retouching to the red tones and the white tones of the painting. There is a further line of restoration along an old stretcher mark to the upper edge of the painting. The modelling of the composition remains fully appreciable and the paint surface is stable.
