The painting can be considered in a good state of preservation beneath a thick layer of highly glossy varnish. Ultra-violet fluorescence examination confirms the presence of a thick varnish, and reveals restoration to the upper edge, and scattered retouching [eg. to the blue mantel, to the face, to the hands].
