The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas has been relined and retains a good tension on its stretcher. There are a few areas of tenting in the paint surface, eg. surrounding Bacchus’s head, which may require stabilising to avoid potential losses. The varnish has discoloured and some discoloured retouching is visible in the flesh tones. Stretcher bar marks are visible. Overall, the artist’s fluent technique remains appreciable and a number of substantial pentimenti are visible to the naked eye, for example in Bacchus’s right arm and left hand.
Examination under ultra violet light reveals scattered retouching throughout.
