The canvas has been relined and retains a good tension on its support. The paint surface is dirty and the old varnish has discoloured. However, the picture presents well and the artist’s energetic brushwork is appreciable throughout with the highest impasto well preserved.
Examination under ultra violet light reveals some strengthening to the Saint’s hand, the darker tones of his shirt and to the background, most of which are found near the edges of the composition. There are some very minor retouchings associated to the craquelure in the head and elsewhere.
