The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This relined canvas is held under tension and remains structurally stable. In raking light, the artist’s painterly technique is highly appreciable in the visible impasto, with some discernible restorations in the upper right of the background. Ultraviolet examination reveals an obscuring layer of varnish, with more recent scattered restoration in the lower quadrant, particularly in the lower right, and further small scattered infilling in the saint’s sleeve. There is further restoration in the upper centre of the canvas overlapping into the saint’s forehead and elements of his face, along with infilling of the craquelure in the background.
