    The earliest handwritten index card invitation to a "Rec Room" party at 1520 Sedgwick Ave. with DJ Kool Herc ever offered at auction. A rare handwritten placard, inviting the holder to a party "Given by : Kool Herc" at "1520 Sedgwick AVE Rec. Room" on "2-23-74" from "9:00-4:00" with a 50 cent admission charge. Before the proliferation of photocopied posters from the mid 1970s onwards, invitations for house parties were often made in a similar manner. (For additional examples see lot 46.)

    While several histories and documentary treatments of the earliest days of hip-hop depict an index card made for the historic 11 August 1973 party at 1520 Sedgwick Ave., no contemporary examples are known to remain extant. The example that is shown in the aforementioned contexts was an artistic recreation.
