Lot Essay

This sculpture by Bernard Matemera was issued as part of the edition Columbus - In Search of a New Tomorrow, published in 1992 as part of the initiative Artists United for Nature. The publication was inspired by and coincided with the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America, the UN Earth Summit at Rio de Janeiro, the EXPO in Sevilla, the Olympic Games in Barcelona and documenta IX in Kassel. Patrons of the project were King Juan Carlos of Spain and Jan Hoet, then curator of documenta IX. The entire sale proceeds of this edition went to benefit the preservation of the world's tropical rainforests. The portfolio included works, texts and music by Max Bill (see lot 61), Christo, Joe Cocker, Hanne Darboven, Bryan Ferry, Ilja Kabakov, Roy Lichtenstein (see lot 62), Robert Longo (see lot 63), Robert Mangold (see lot 64), Nam June Paik, Jesus Rafael Soto, Antoni Tàpies (see lot 66), Mario Vargas Llosa and many others.
Each of the 36 contributing artists received a complete artist's proof set in recognition of their work.
