Lot Essay
Charles Hinman is best known for his shaped, multi-faceted canvases, painted with intense yet mixed colors juxtaposed with white surfaces. The present set of seven screenprints are the perfect translation of his style and method into the print medium. By embossing both the colored and the blank areas of the sheets, he created the optical illusion of a three-dimensional space with minimal means. His screenprints thus retain the apparent lightness of his painted objects, which seem to float and hover rather than hang from the wall.
