Lot Essay

A pioneer of artistic screenprinting in Germany, Luitpold Domberger set up his first print workshop in Stuttgart in 1949. Domberger’s skill as a screenprint gained international renown and paved the way for many collaborations with international artists. Domberger also contributed to the professionalization of the screen printer and fostered the careers of many young artists in his workshop. Domberger specialized in the intricate hand-cutting of stencils and made extensive experimental use of fluorescent inks and other new materials in their collaborations. In addition to producing works after the designs of other artists, Domberger made a number of his own screenprints in a hard-edged style reminiscent of the works associated with the Minimalist and Op Art movements.
